ATLANTA -- Jerry Royster was neither sentimental nor interested in playing all night.
Royster's 12th-inning sacrifice fly Tuesday night lifted the San Diego Padres to a 5-4 victory over his former teammates, the Atlanta Braves.
The victory kept the Padres in second place in the NL West, five games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Royster says the Padres' standing in the National League West race with Los Angeles was more on his mind than beating his old club.
'I came out here just trying to win a baseball game,' Royster said. 'I didn't have much time to think about beating my old team. I just wanted to make sure we get back on track.
'We have to start winning. We haven't been playing very good and I'm just glad to get one under our belt.'
It was the Braves' sixth loss in their last seven extra-inning games.
'Something always seems to happen to us,' said Horner.
Craig Lefferts, 6-4, worked 1 2-3 innings in relief before needing help from Roy Lee Jackson, who got the final out for his first save.
Tim Flannery led off the 12th with a single off losing reliever Rick Camp, 2-5, and went to third on Tony Gwynn's single, his third hit of the game. One out later, Royster delivered a sacrifice fly to left to score Flannery.
Atlanta had tied the score 4-4 in the eighth off starter Eric Show. Dale Murphy led off with a walk, went to third on Bob Horner's single and scored on Terry Harper's groundout.
San Diego took a 4-3 lead in the eighth. Steve Garvey led off with a single to chase starter Rick Mahler. Graig Nettles greeted reliever Terry Forster with a double to right. Royster pinch ran for Nettles and Terry Kennedy followed with an RBI groundout to score Garvey and chase Forster.
Carmelo Martinez reached reliever Bruce Sutter for a RBI single to make it 4-3.
Atlanta took a 3-2 lead in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Rick Cerone.
San Diego went ahead 2-0 in the second. With one out Kennedy doubled and scored on Martinez's double. After Kevin McReynolds was hit by a pitch, Garry Templeton followed with an RBI single.
The Braves drew to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning on Harper's 13th home run.
Atlanta tied it 2-2 in the third on Horner's sacrifice fly.
