CHARLESTON, Ill. -- The St. Louis Cardinals Monday opened their 1985 training camp with the signing of six draft choices, leaving unsigned only No. 1 draft choice Freddie Joe Nunn, of Mississippi.
Signed to the Cardinals were their No. 3 pick, Lance Smith, a tackle from Louisiana State University; fourth-round pick Ron Wolfley, a West Virginia running back; number-six choice Jay Novacek, a wide receiver from Wyoming; eighth-selection Rob Monaco, a Vanderbilt tackle; ninth-round pick Scott Williams, a tight-end from Georgia; and punter and kicker Rickey Anderson, an eleventh-round selection from Vanderbilt.
A total of 41 free agents, draft choices, and selected veterans reported to the Cardinals training camp at Eastern Illinois University.
The Cardinals begin two-a-day workouts Tuesday, while the balance of the veterans are scheduled to report on Thursday July 25. The team will continue to practice at EIU until camp ends August 22. An intra-squad skirmish is tentatively scheduled for August 3. The first pre-season game is against the Chicago Bears, August 9, at Busch Stadium.
