PHILADELPHIA -- Von Hayes highlighted a nine-run first inning with a record-setting two homers Tuesday night, igniting the Philadelphia Phillies to a 26-7 thrashing of the New York Mets.
Hayes became the first player to hit two home runs in a first inning and helped the Phillies post the biggest run total by a National League team since the New York Giants beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 26-8 at the Polo Grounds in 1944 in the first game of a double header.
The 26 runs were the most scored in the 103-year history of the Phillies franchise. Included in the 27-hit attack were four hits by Juan Samuel, a club-record 10 doubles, two triples and Hayes' two home runs.
Hayes hit a solo home run as the leadoff batter and then came back with the first grand slam of his career in an inning that also featured a triple by Rick Schu and the first of three doubles by Bo Diaz.
The Phillies knocked out starter and loser Tom Gorman, 3-3, then shelled reliever Calvin Schiraldi for 10 runs on 10 hits to lead 16-0 after two innings.
The 26 runs were the most ever scored against the Mets.
Charles Hudson, 2-6, hurled the first five innings to pick up the triumph. The Mets ripped him for 13 hits and seven runs after the Phillies took the big lead. Rafael Santana, Howard Johnson and George Foster had doubles for New York and Wally Backman had three singles.
Mike Schmidt had a single and a two-run double in the seven-run second inning, which included doubles by Glenn Wilson and Diaz and a triple by Gary Maddox.
The Phillies batted around again in the fifth while scoring five times against reliever Joe Sambito. Schu's two-run double was the big blow of the inning after Hayes had walked with the bases loaded to drive in his sixth run.
After scoring once in the sixth, the Phillies used doubles by Steve Jeltz and Wilson in the seventh to score four more runs and bat around for the fourth time in the game.
