PROVO, Utah -- Entertainer Marie Osmond, a devout mormon who married a Brigham Young basketball star almost three years ago, confirmed that she has filed for divorce.
Osmond, 25, and Steve Craig, 28, have one child, Stephen James, 2. Osmond family spokesman Ron Clark said the youngster is living with his mother in Los Angeles.
He said Osmond filed the divorce papers in 4th District Court in Provo. Craig has been working in the business operations of the Osmond Studios.
Clark said Osmond would not disclose the problems that led to her separation from her husband and her decision to end the marriage.
'Osmond and her husband have been in a reconciliation period for the past six months,' Clark said. 'It's actually been at least their second reconciliation.'
Clark said Osmond would continue with her singing career.
The couple was married in the church's Salt Lake City Temple in June 1982 in a ceremony that attracted reporters and photographers from around the world. The church believes a ceremony in the temple is intended to bond a couple in marriage for eternity.
But Don LeFevre, a spokesman for the Mormon Church, added that while the church discourages divorce, it realizes the relationships do not always work out. He said the church also believes 'the templemarriage and promise of an eternal marriage is totally dependent on the individuals.'
Clark said he believed Craig was living in Ogden, 65 miles north of Provo.
Osmond is the only sister of six Osmond brothers also in show business and two other brothers who are not. The family became popular as a singing group after television appearances on 'The Andy Williams Show.'
Donny Osmond and Marie Osmond played hosts on their own variety show, 'Donny & Marie,' which aired on ABC beginning in 1976. In recent years, they have been performing separately.
