LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. -- Residents of the future Mrs. Bruce Springsteen's hometown are concerned media attention and the rock superstar's fans will disrupt the couple's wedding ceremony.

Springsteen, 35, and his fiance, Julianne Phillips, 25, whose parents live in Lake Oswego, were reported planning to get married in the well-to-do Portland suburb of 28,000 residents this week, possibly Wednesday.

Mayor William E. Young said earlier in the weekend, 'It's kind of neat for the city, just as long as we don't interfere with their plans.'

Residents who know the Phillips family said they were concerned about the deluge of attention any ceremony would receive from the news media and Springsteen fans.

'It's kind of too bad that the poor kid can't have a quiet wedding,' said Andrew Edwards, director of Lake Oswego Community Theater, where Phillips, a model-turned-actress had one of her first roles in 1982. 'We wish her the best.'

A retired Catholic priest inOmaha, Neb., who had been asked by the Phillips family to perform the ceremony, said Sunday he would be unable to go to Lake Oswego because he had the flu. He has never met the bride-to-be or Springsteen.

The Rev. Richard Parr said he has remained a close family friend since meeting Phillips' parents when they lived in Norfolk, Neb., 40 years ago. He said they moved before Julianne, the youngest of six children, was born.

'They're really good friends of mine,' Parr said. 'They're the nicest people I've had the privilege of knowing in my 49 years in the priesthood.'

Springsteen and Miss Phillips met backstage at a concert six months ago, her parents said. The marriage will be the first for both.
