TOPEKA, Kan. -- Pete Williams scored 25 points to lead Brewster Heights Packing of Brewster, Wash., to the National Amateur Athletic Union Basketball Tournament championship Sunday with an 83-75 victory over the Lafayette, Ind., Hustlers.
Williams, who played this past season at the University of Arizona, also grabbed 12 rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team.
Eddie Smith, a Wichita South High School and Arizona graduate, joined Williams on the all-tournament team, tossing in 20 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for Brewster Heights. Smith was named the tournament's most valuable player.
The Apple Packers led 39-32 at halftime and never trailed in the second half, though the Hustlers did pull to within 57-56, midway through the half.
The AAU tournament, begun in 1897, is the nation's oldest amateur basketball tournament. It has been played annually since 1913.
