Former Mayor William Stansbury and his elderly mother were...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Former Mayor William Stansbury and his elderly mother were killed and his wife was injured when they were struck by a car while on their way to church Thursday night, authorities said.

Stansbury, who had his leg severed in the accident, died of cardiac arrest at 10:21 p.m. EST at University Hospital.

His mother, Eileen, 84, was pronounced dead 10 minutes later.

Stansbury's wife, Mary Ellen, 46, was admitted to the hospital in satisfactory condition.

Authorities said the three were crossing the northbound lane of Bardstown Road when they were struck by an auto after another car had stopped to let them cross.

Stansbury served his term as mayor beginning in December 1977. He had most recently practiced law and served as a hearing officer for state government.
