LOS ANGELES -- A rock band from New Orleans called The Raffeys has admitted altering the famed HOLLYWOOD sign by draping bed sheets over the 50-foot letters to spell out RAFFEYSOD.

Band member Charles Arack said at an open-air concert on Ocean Front Walk in suburban Venice Sunday that the group was responsible for the New Year's Eve prank that had baffled authorities.

'We are here to conquer Hollywood,' said Arack, 'and we definitely want to let people know.'

The four-member band drove to Southern California three months ago and is still looking for club dates and a recording contract, group leader Raff Raffey said.

The vandals altered the white-lettered sign by hanging sheets over the wooden letters to spell out the name of the rock band. The band members have since taken the sheets down.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce filed a vandalism complaint last week, but police said they are not sure if the band will be prosecuted.

The famous sign sits on a hill high above Sunset and Hollywood boulevards.
