REGINA, Saskatchewan -- Dean Shaw, the 18-year-old goalkeeper who returned to the nets last year after surgeons reattached two fingers severed by a skate, is looking to make another comeback.

Shaw returned from his injury to join by the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League this season but was cut last month after playing just four games.

He said Wednesday he was hoping to return to hockey either in the WHL or university ranks.

'I've been running and lifting weights,' Shaw said in an interview from his Regina home. 'I'll be ready if the phone ever rings.'

Shaw lost his fingers last April while playing for the Selkirk (Man.) Steelers in a Centennial Cup playoff game in Winnipeg. His glove came off during a goalmouth scramble and an opposing player accidentally skated over his hand.

He lost parts of his ring, middle finger and baby finger but doctors were able to reattach all but the tip of his baby finger after lengthy microsurgery.

He returned to hockey in time for the Pats training camp with the aid of a padded catching mitt, specially designed for him.

Shaw said he had some offers to play from Tier Two clubs but said that would represent a 'step back.'

'I've got a few things junior-wise in the fire and I'll probably be looking into those,' he said. 'If not, (there's) college.'
