NORWALK, Conn. -- Australia's Mark Kratzmann and Argentina's Gabriele Sabattini have been chosen the world's top-ranked junior tennis players for 1984 in the year-end rankings announced Thursday by Tennis Magazine.
The left-handed Kratzmann won junior titles at Wimbledon and the U.S. and Australian Opens, missing out on a junior Grand Slam when he was beaten by Sweden's Kent Carlsson in the junior French Open final.
Sabattini, 14, won the French, Italian and Monte Carlo events.
Luke Jensen of Ludington, Mich., and Brad Pearce of Provo, Utah, are the only Americans ranked among the boys. Jensen, who plays with both hands, is ranked No. 2 and Pearce is No. 4 behind West Germany's Boris Becker.
Bulgaria's Katarina Maleeva, the U.S. Open girls champion, is ranked second behind Sabattini and Annabel Croft of Britain is third.
