TOKYO -- Katsuragi Ace, a 40-to-1 shot, surged past favorites from the United States and Britain Sunday to become the first Japanese horse to win the $579,000 Japan Cup.
Katsuragi Ace, ridden by Katsuichi Nishiura, ran the 1 mile course in 2:26:3 to take the winner's purse of over $300,000 in front of a crowd of 112,000 at Tokyo's Fuchu race track.
The 4-year-old colt led from wire-to-wire, finishing 1 lengths ahead of a British entry Bedtime. Another Japanese horse, Symboli Rudolf, finished third.
American entry Majesty's Prince, the early favorite ridden by Donald McBeth, finished fourth.
