The California Supreme Court refused Tuesday to hear the appeal of Thomas Boyd Ritchie III, who said he has used III since he was 8-years-old and wanted it legally recognized to 'save confusion.'
In the lower courts, Ritchie has argued that III is the only way to distinguish his name from that of his father and his grandfather.
The action by the Supreme Court leaves intact a state Court of Appeal decision denying his request.
Richard Hicks, Ritchie's lawyer, said in arguments the Department of Motor Vehicles had issued a driver's license and a bank issued a checking account in the name III.
