LONG POND, Pa. -- A young deer tried to match speeds with Neil Bonnett's Chevy during a practice session at Pocono raceway Saturday - and lost.
Bonnett was at top speed crossing the tunnel going into Turn 3 when the deer, just bigger than the fawn stage, swerved in front of the car.
Traveling at 200 mph, the car struck the animal, which became wedged behind the grill alongside the radiator. Bonnett brought the car into the garage area where the dead animal was removed.
'I once saw a guy hit a jackrabbit during a stock practice in Texas, but that was the largest animal I ever saw hit until today,' said Bobby Allison, who had rushed over to see why a crowd had gathered around Bonnett's car.
