CBS officials said he will work a minimum of 12 appearances for the network beginning in December.

Collins has done color commentary for CBS during the NBA playoffs during the last three years.

Arizona State head basketball coach Bob Weinhauer was unavailable for comment.

Collins said he accepted the job because he was growing tired of recruiting and because of professional opportunities.

'I wanted Bob to be fully aware this was an opportunity I couldn't turn down,' Collins said. 'It's like an assistant getting a head-coaching job. I told Bob I would be happy to help when recruits come in, and to come down and volunteer early in the year.'

Collins, 32, was hired by Weinhauer after he was named to replace Ned Wulk in 1982. Collins spent nine years in the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers.
