STORRS, Conn. -- Nathan L. Whetten, the first dean of the University of Connecticut Graduate School, died in Canterbury Villa convalescent home in Willimantic Monday at 83.

Whetten, a professor of sociology, was appointed dean of the university's graduate school in 1940, and the graduate center is named for him. He made a number of scholarly contributions, including the first study of suburbanization in Connecticut, focusing on the communities of Windsor, Wilton and Norwich.

He is survived by his wife, Theora Lucile Johnson, sons Nathan of Ballston Lake, N.Y. and John of Los Alamos, N.M. and six grandchildren. A memorial service is planned at Storrs Congregational Church.
