Pat Day, the nation's leading rider in wins in...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Pat Day, the nation's leading rider in wins in both 1982 and 1983, captured an unprecedented seven victories in eight mounts at Churchill Downs Wednesday.

Day lost only the fourth race, while aboard Hatchet Job, to a horse named Pat's Rullah.

He had won five races at the track five times in the past 14 months. Two other riders had brought home six winners, Jimmie Lee in 1907 and Steve Brooks in 1948, but no rider had ever posted seven wins.

Day captured both ends of the Daily Double, aboard Clever Allemont in the first and Incense in the second, and won the featured $18,800 Barren River Stakes aboard Straight Edition.

During the current Churchill Downs meet, Day has won 64 races in 208 mounts. In all, he has finished in the money in 144 of his races at the Downs this year.

Jim McKnight, with 30 wins in 157 mounts, is second in the current jockey standings at the Louisville track.
