Chronology of manhunt for six Virginia killers

Thursday, May 31 -- Linwood and James Briley, Lem Tuggle, Willie Leroy Jones, Earl Clanton and Derick, all convicted murderers on Virginia's death row at Boydton, Va., create a disturbance, take hostages and stage a bomb hoax to trick guards into opening the gates. Flee the maximum-security Mecklenburg Correctional Center in the largest death row jailbreak in U.S. history.

Friday, June 1 -- Escape van found in Warrenton, N.C., and authorities from Virginia and North Carolina set up command center to coordinate the search. Clanton and Peterson captured in a laundromat while drinking wine and eating cheese.

Saturday, June 2 -- Authorities using bloodhounds, helicopters and small airplanes sweep the Warrenton area after a series of sightings from residents. No one is captured.

Sunday, June 3 -- Robert Landon, head of the Virginia Department of Corrections in Richmond, says the escape was a result of 'a breakdown in human engineering.' Blames guards for failing to follow procedures and 16 prison employees are put on administrative leave.

Monday, June 4 -- Authorities comb the tiny community of Paschall, N.C., on the Virginia-North Carolina border after sightings of two men believed to be James and Linwood Briley. Virginia Gov. Charles Robb offers $10,000 reward for information leading to capture of the escapees.

Wednesday, June 6 -- Person County sheriff's deputies and the North Carolina highway patrol seal off part of Hyco Lake near Roxboro, N.C., after sighting of at least one escapee. Massive search yields nothing.

Friday, June 8 -- Tuggle and Jones are captured in Jay, Vt.; Tuggle at a roadblock in a rural area after robbing a store, and Jones after calling police and surrendering.

Saturday, June 9 -- Rumors sweep Richmond, Va., that the Brileys have returned to their home. No one is found.

Sunday, June 10 -- Canadian authorities receive a report from Philipsburg, Quebec, community that the Briley brothers were seen near the Vermont-Quebec border. Manhunt begins.

Thursday, June 14 -- Canadians switch search to Bedford, Quebec, after insect repellent and canned food are stolen from a rural grocery store. No one found.

Tuesday, June 19 -- FBI agents in Philadelphia arrest Linwood and James Briley without incident at their uncle's home. Johnny Lee Council is charged with harboring them there since June 1.
