ATLANTA -- Rookie Brad Komminsk showed his potential as a major league player Tuesday as he smacked his first career grand slam to help the Atlanta Braves to an 11-6 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
'He's smoked that ball,' said winning pitcher Rick Camp. 'He's going to be a great player, there's no doubt about that. He's strong. he's got the potential to possibly be another Murph (Dale Murphy).'
Komminsk's homer, the third of his career, won $100,000 for a Charleston, S.C., woman in a home run contest.
Evelyn Rogala had entered a contest sponsored by Goody's, a headache remedy manafacturer. She was not at the game, and was not immediately available for comment.
While the contest will continue for other hits, the grand slam prize will not be offered again this season, Braves officials said.
'I think someone might not sleep too well tonight. I'm happy that I hit it and that it's going to help someone out,' said Komminsk. 'A hundred thousamd dollars, that's a lot of money.'
Komminsk also said the victory shows the Braves have the ability to score a lot of runs quickly. 'Claudell (Washington) and Ralphie (Rafael Ramirez) have been getting on base quit a bit lately,' Komminsk said. 'With those guys getting on base, and with the lineup we have following, anything can happen.'
'I think we have the capability to score a lot of runs and a lot of runs quickly,' he added.
With the Giants leading 5-3 in the third inning, Claudell Washington led off with an infield hit and went to second on a balk to knock out starter Mark Davis. Glenn Hubbard then greeted losing reliever Jeff Cornell, 0-2, with a sacrifice to move Washington to third. Rafael Ramirez reached base on a fielder's choice when Washington was thrown out at the plate, and Dale Murphy then singled and Bob Watson walked to load the bases. Komminsk followed by belting a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence for his third home run.
Atlanta reliever Rick Camp, the second of four pitchers, tossed 5 2-3 innings to pick up the victory and improve his record to 3-0.
The Giants got to starter Craig McMurtry for five runs in the first inning on a two-run triple by Jeff Leonard, a run-soring groundout by Jack Clark and a two-run homer by Bob Brenly.
Atlanta cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Ramirez, a sacrifuce fly by Murphy and a run-producing groundout by Watson.
Atlanta increased its lead to 8-5 in the seventh on an RBI single by Ramirez, but San Franciscoo scored a run in the eighth on Brenly's second homer of the game and seventh of the season.
The Braves added three runs in the eighth on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Randy Lerch, a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Rufino Linares and an RBI double by Washington.
