PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sen. Mark Hatfield, who has never lost an election in his 33-year political career, easily won the Republican nomination for another term and all five Oregon representatives captured their primaries.
Hatfield will face liberal state Sen. Margie Hendriksen of Eugene in November.
She was an easy winner in the Democratic primary, getting 76 percent of the vote against Portland carpet salesman Sam Kahl.
In a closely fought race for the Democratic nomination in the 5th Congressional District to face conservative Republican Rep. Denny Smith, state Sen. Ruth McFarland, the party's nominee two years ago, narrowly beat state Rep. Peter Courtney.
Hatfield, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, did little campaigning against a field that included a fundamentalist Christian and a substitute teacher.
Ms. Hendriksen, with a strong voting record on environmental and women's issues, said she sent a telegram to Hatfield challenging him to a series of debates.
'People are looking for someone who understands the problems of the state,' she said.
Bruce Long, a Douglas County commissioner and a newcomer to congressional politics, was the winner in a four-way Republican race in the 4th District and will square off against veteran Democratic incumbent Jim Weaver.
In the 3rd District, former state Rep. Drew Davis defeated Thomas Phelan, the GOP nominee two years ago, and will take on two-term incumbent Democrat Ron Wyden.
Former timber-company executive Bill Moshofsky easily defeated George Vernon in the 1st District and will try again to defeat Democratic Rep. Les AuCoin in a rematch of their 1982 race.
In the 2nd District, Vale rancher Larryann Willis was unopposed for the Democratic nomination and will face freshman GOP Rep. Bob Smith, who defeated her two years ago.
