Berkeley Gazette folds after 107 years

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The 107-year-old Berkeley Gazette has published its final edition.

With a headline that said 'Bye Bye Berkeley,' the daily newspaper closed down Saturday, an apparent victim of its inability toadapt to social and economic changes and competition from other San Francisco Bay area newspapees.

The Gazette had a circulation of about 5,000, and another 5,000 copies were given away. The University of California's Daily Californian distributes 20,000 free papers and there are several free weeklies in the Berkeley area as well, plus competition from Oakland and San Francisco.
