One of Gretzky's goals, with 63 seconds left in the first period, was disputed by the Blues and led to the ejection of St. Louis Coach Jacques DeMers by referee Ron Fournier.

Demers ran onto the ice after the period and had to be restrained by his players from going after Fournier, who ruled Gretzky's shot from behind the net on a power play had hit goaltender Mike Liut in the back and bounced into the net even though the goal judge did not signal a goal.

The goal gave the Oilers a 3-1 lead, but the Blues responded and tied the game on second-period goals by Jorgen Pettersson and Doug Gilmour. Gretzky, however, poked a shot past Liut at 12:51 of the period to again give Edmonton the lead.

Glenn Anderson increased the Edmonton lead to 5-3 early in the third period with his 36th goal before Mark Reeds pulled the Blues within 5-4 with 4:09 to play.
