MOSCOW -- Sarkis Martirosyan, a retired army lieutenant general and official hero of the Soviet Union, has died at the age of 84, a newspaper reaching Moscow Sunday said.

The Armenian newspaper Kommunist said Martirosyan, who took part in the World War II assault on Berlin and the liberation of Czechoslovakia, died Wednesday.

For his valor, he was given the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

Martirosyan was a member of the Armenian Supreme Soviet and had been awarded the Order of Lenin four times and other decorations by the Soviet and foreign governments, the newspaper said.

The obituary was signed by members of the Armenian Supreme Soviet.
