Elton John to marry Tuesday

SYDNEY, Australia -- Rock star Elton John will marry his German girlfriend Renate Blauel on St. Valentine's Day in a Sydney suburb called Darling Point, the singer's agent said Monday.

The British singer declared several years ago he was bisexual, and the couple took the rock world by surprise with their decision to marry.

'He's the nicest guy I've ever met ... I've heard all sorts of stories about Elton and that he's supposed to be bisexual, but that doesn't worry me,' Sydney's Sunday Telegraph quoted Ms. Blauel as saying.

'I'm just feeling fabulous,' Ms. Bauel told the Telegraph.

Publicity agents in London said the bride, 30, would wear a traditional white silk wedding dress and the 36-year-old groom would wear white tails.

Three thousand roses and hundreds of white orchids were being flown in from New Zealand to decorate the church and reception hall in Darling Point, a suburb about 2 miles from downtown Sydney.

Patti Mostyn, John's agent in Sydney, said New South Wales Attorney General Paul Landa has allowed the couple to get married Tuesday with only 24 hours notice instead of the legal 30 days -- waiving a law intended to prevent 'immature people making immature decisions.'

A spokesman for Landa's office said the multimillionaire entertainer and his fiancee were 'two mature people who have known each other for a long time.'

John, born Reg Dwight, reportedly met Ms. Blauel 18 months ago while recording his latest album, 'Too Low for Zero,' on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. She was a recording engineer working on the album.

The two decided to marry last Friday while in a Sydney restaurant.

The guest list includes some of Australia's top show business personalities and some friends of John's who flew into Sydney for the wedding.

John is due to leave Sydney on Wednesday for a concert tour of New Zealand.
