Stief, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound wide receiver, played five seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals but was released before the start of the 1983 season.

A standout receiver at Portland State, the 28-year-old Steif's best year in the NFL was as a rookie when he caught 24 passes for 477 yards and four touchdowns.

'Dave has the experience to help us,' said Wranglers General Manager Bruce Allen. 'We feel we have one of the finest bunch of receivers in this league and Dave can add to our list. He's also a leader on special teams, which is an important area of the game.'

Stief captained the Cardinals' special teams in 1981 and 1982.
