Jeff Hastings of Norwich, Vt., had a near record...

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. -- Jeff Hastings of Norwich, Vt., had a near record final jump of 112 meters Sunday to win the 90-meter event and combined titles at the U.S. Ski Jumping Championships on Howelsen Hill.

Hastings, 24, a Denver hotel management trainee during the off season, scored 213.3 points for the two jumps that combine points for distance and style.

He won Saturday's 70 meter event with a jump of 104 meters.

Landis Arnold of Winter Park, Colo., placed second with 204.7 points, and Dennis McGrane of Littleton, Colo., took third with 203.1 points.

Finishing fourth to boost his Olympic stock was Matt Petri of Lake Placid, N.Y., followed by Mike Holland of Norwich, Vt., and Zane Palmer of Kremmling, Colo.

Hastings is ranked sixth in the World Cup standings and has been named to the Olympic team that will represent the United States in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, next month.

The Steamboat Springs meet, which concludes with a similar meet next weekend at Lake Placid, N.Y., was used to select five other members of the 1984 U.S. Olympic ski jumping team.
