NEW YORK -- Purvis Short of Golden State scored 57 points last Saturday to spearhead the Warriors' 154-133 victory over San Antonio and by doing so posted the most points by any player in the NBA this year. For his efforts, Monday he was named NBA Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 8.
His previous career high was 45 points and he bettered Kiki Vandeweghe's prevous league-leading total of 51 points. Short scored 22 of his points in the fourth quarter.
In the other Warriors game of the week, Short posted 17 points and five assists to a 115-106 upset over Philadelphia Tuesday. Short limited Julius Erving to 13 points.
Other nominees for the award were Mark Aguirre ofDallas, Adrian Dantley of Utah, Clark Kellogg of Indiana, Andrew Toney of Philadelphia, Isiah Thomas of Detroit and Bill Cartwright of New York.
