GUATEMALA CITY -- Unidentified men attacked the Mexican Embassy in Guatemala City at dawn Saturday with hand grenades and machine guns but caused only slight damage, an embassy spokesman said.

'The policemen guarding the embassy couldn't respond to the attack which was carried out very quickly,' said Reynaldo Calderon, Mexican Embassy commerce attache.

'We hadn't received any threats,' he said.

Calderon said the attackers threw grenades and sprayed the embassy walls with machine-gun fire but reported damage was slight.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack came a week after a similar attempt on the Nicaraguan Embassy by an apparently right-wing group called 'Solidarity with the Counter-Revolution.'

Nicaragua's ambassador to Guatemala, Orlando Rojas Morales, blamed that attack on supporters of Nicaragua's former rightist dictator, Anastasio Somoza, who was ousted by the Sandinista regime in 1979.
