Walter capped off a two-man breakaway with Bobby Smith at 15:23 as he deked Quebec goalie Clint Malarchuk to move Montreal ahead 3-2. The goal, a shorthanded effort, was his 12th of the season. With his team holding a one-man advantage, Walter backhanded a rebound into the Nordiques' net with 41 seconds left in the middle period.

The Canadiens had opened the scoring 33 seconds into the first period when Chris Nilan cruised in front of the Quebec goal to tip in a shot off the stick of Guy Carbonneau. The Nordiques tied the score at 14:44 as Michel Goulet registered his 26th goal, on a pass from Mario Marois.

Peter Stastny gave Quebec a 2-1 edge at 4:07 of the second period, after Montreal's Craig Ludwig lost the puck behind his own net. But the Canadiens came back to tie it at 6:31 on a power-play goal by Guy Lafleur.
