Robbery suspect coudn't elude marathon trooper

LANSING, Mich. -- Attempting to elude state police trooper Dennis MacDonel on foot was not the best method a robbery suspect could make.

Daryl Welton, a former St. Johns resident, tried it Sunday and found out the hard way the trooper is a marathon runner.

'Heck, when he caught the guy, Dennis probably hadn't even hit his stride yet,' a state police spokesman said Monday. 'It was kind of a joke around here.'

Police sought warrants charging Welton with breaking and entering, fleeing an officer and driving under the influence.
