TOPEKA, Kan. -- Brice Durbin, a former teacher, coach and high school administrator in several communities throughout Kansas, died Sunday at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness.

Durbin authored seven books and numerous pamphlets on counseling and mental attitude of athletes. His book, 'Portrait of a Basketball Player,' received national acclaim. Survivors include one daughter, two sons, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His eldest son, Brice B. Durbin, is the executive director of the National Federation of State High School Associations.
