BELGRADE, Yugoslavia -- A journalist serving a 10-month jail term for anti-state activities is seriously ill and friends said Saturday they feared she might not be receiving appropriate treatment.
In a letter written Nov. 24 in Belgrade's Padinska Skela jail, Ranka Cicak said: 'Regarding my health it will be very bad with my eye. It is extremely swollen and is closing ... now, on the right side of my neck there is a gland coming up.'
Ms. Cicak was sentenced for 'hostile propaganda and slandering the reputation' of Yugoslavia and late President Josip Broz Tito.
She was a correspondent in Belgrade for the Vjesnik newspapers of Zagreb, in western Yugoslavia.
