BAL HARBOUR, Fla. -- Two electrical engineers took top honors Monday in the 1983 Rookie Grand National bridge championship, beating more than 6,000 pairs who qualified for the tournament last September.

Anthony Cannaverde of Bethany, Conn., and Joseph Marciano of Newton, Conn., won the week-long competition, competing in the final round against 28 pairs from across the continent.

The contest is part of the 1983 North American Bridge championships under way in south Florida.
