RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Countess Pereira Carneiro, owner and publisher of the Jornal do Brazil, died Monday following a fall in a domestic accident in Brasilia, the newspaper said. She was 84.

Widely known just as 'The Countess,' Maurina Dunshee de Abranches Pereira Carneiro inherited the Jornal do Brasil from her second husband Count Ernesto Pereira Carneiro on his death in 1953.

She soon started a program of modernization which started with a lengthy visit to the United States to study graphical and press techniques.

Other innovations were new presses and a Sunday supplement angled to quality coverage of literature and the arts.

Later, Jornal do Brasil was to move from cramped downtown offices to a modern building beside the main highway into Rio.

One of four traditional quality dailies published in the major cities of Rio and Sao Paulo, the Jornal do Brasil has a daily circulation of some 200,000.
