PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Columbia midfielder Steve Sirtis was named the Ivy League Soccer Player of the Year Wednesday and teammate Neil Banks was named the league's Rookie of the Year.
Sirtis, a four-time All-Ivy selection, was tied for second in league scoring this year with three goals and six assists in seven games.
Sirtis was selected for the honor in a vote by coaches. Teammate Soloman Gayle, who collected four second-place votes, was his closest challenger.
Banks, a fullback who immediately stepped into the starting lineup, was noted for his tactical skills, quickness and endurance.
The Ivy League has selected a Player of the Year for five seasons and each award has been given to a Columbia player. Banks was the fourth honored rookie, the third from Columbia.
