SAN DIEGO -- The aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk collided with a Navy tanker during refueling Tuesday, but officials said neither ship was seriously damaged and no one was injured.

Navy spokesman Fred Larsen said the collision occurred about 12:20 p.m. PST 180 miles southwest of San Diego while the carrier was on routine duty.

It collided with the USS Wabash as the ships approached each other for a side-by-side refueling.

The Kitty Hawk suffered minor damage to a starboard deck, while the Wabash's port side railing was damaged. Both ships continued normal operations after the accident.

The Kitty Hawk was scheduled to return to its home port of San Diego Wednesday for Thanksgiving leave. The Wabash was en route to its port at Alameda on the San Francisco Bay.

The carrier is scheduled to sail to the Western Pacific in January for Far East duty.
