NEW ASA JOLSON

By JOAN HANAUER, United Press International

There's another Asa Jolson around. That was the real name of entertainer Al Jolson, but this Asa's a girl. She was born this week in Nashville, Tenn., to Victoria Jolson, estranged wife of Jolson's adopted son, Al Jolson Jr.

The couple married in February and separated six weeks later. Jolson denies the baby is his. ''Mammy' and daughter are doing fine,' said Marvin Mitchelson, Mrs. Jolson's lawyer, who won her $3,000-a-month in temporary support.

Violinist Isaac Stern, president of the Carnegie Hall Corp., says he worked hard for the comforts he enjoys. He told House & Garden that today 'orchestral musicians are some of the best paid and protected members of any profession, and artistry has given way to artisanship. Today, material things outweight the fire in the belly, and I think there is a danger of complacency. It's worthwhile if you are a musician to say thank you sometimes for the privilege.'
