HONOLULU -- America's Kathy Horvath held off a determined attack by hard-hitting Elizabeth Sayers of Australia to prevail 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 Saturday and advance to the semifinals of the $100,000 Ginny Tennis Championships.
Horvath, who shocked the tennis world by handing Martina Navratilova her only defeat of 1983 at the French Open, used a strong serve -- and took advantage of a sudden rush of errors by Sayers -- to win the tiebreaker and then the match Friday.
Sandy Collins of Odessa, Texas crushed Ginny Purdy of Indianapolis in an impressive 6-2, 6-2 display in the day's other quarterfinal match.
Top-seeded Carling Basset, at 15 the youngest player in the tournament, and Yvonne Vermaak of South Africa are the other semifinalists.
Semifinal matches pitting Horvath against Collins and Basset against Vermaak are scheduled for Saturday, with finals set for Sunday.
