COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- North American and Golden Gloves champion Jesse Benavides of Corpus Christi, Texas, decisioned 1980 Olympic team member Robert Shannon Thursday in the semifinals of the 1983 U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships.
Benavides was the aggressor and outpunched Shannon for a 4-1 decision in the 119-pound match.
Shannon, Tacoma, Wash., is a former U.S. Amateur champion at 106 pounds.
In another semifinal bout, Frank Tate of Detroit, the current Golden Gloves champion, decisioned Danny Trujillo of Rock Springs, Wyo., at 156 pounds.
Trujillo, in a fight last month, had decisioned Tommy Corr of Ireland, who was third in the world championships last year. Trujillo took third at this year's Pan American Games.
Defending U.S. Amateur champions Warren Thompson of Baltimore and Michael Grogan of Atlanta scored victories in Thursday's semifinals.
Thompson decisioned Michael Williams of Broussard, La., in the super heavyweight class, while Grogan decisioned Michael Nunn of Davenport, Iowa, at 165 pounds.
The competition, the main qualifying event for the Olympic Trials, concludes Friday.
