WASHINGTON -- President Reagan Friday nominated William E. Mayer to be assistant secretary of defense for health affairs.

Mayer, who presently serves as administrator for the Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Administration in Rockville, Md., would succeed John H. Moxley.

Mayer previously served as medical director of the San Diego County Department of Health Services and was chief of the U.S. Army alcoholism treatment facility in Germany.
