CHICAGO -- Former 20-game winner Rick Reuschel won his battle to get back into the major leagues Tuesday when the Chicago Cubs announced they had purchased the contract of the veteran right-handed pitcher.
Reuschel, 34, will join the Cubs at home Friday.
The Cubs purchased his contract from their Class A Quad Cities farm team. Reuschel, the leading starter on the Cubs in the late 1970s, convinced the club to give him a tryout in mid-summer after he was released by the New York Yankees.
In 12 starts at Quad Cities, Reuschel had a 3-4 record with a 2.19 ERA.Reuschel, who had been traded to the Yankees for pitcher Doug Bird and infielder Pat Tabler in June, 1981, had walked only seven and struck out 52.
In addition, the Cubs announced they had purchased the contract of second baseman Dan Rohn, 27, from their Iowa farm club in the American Association. Rohn batted .315 in 117 games with Iowa with eight homers and 57 RBI. He will report to the Cubs in Cincinnati on Thursday.
