KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs Monday traded away two veterans for future draft choices and cut seven other players - including three veterans -- to drop their roster to the required 49-player limit.

Among the cuts were Jeff Gossett, the American Football Conference's fourth-leading punter in 1982 with a 41.4 average. Gossett was entering his tOird year as a pro.

The Chiefs announced shortly before the 4 p.m. EDT deadline for trimming rosters to 49 players they had traded 10-year veteran tackle Charlie Getty to the Green Bay Packers and two-year center Les Studdard to the Philadelphia Eagles. Both trades were for undisclosed draft choices.

Studdard proved expendable following the acquisition of Bob Rush from San Diego during the off season. Rookie Dave Lutz won the starting right tackle position from Getty during the pre-season.

Studdard, 6-foot-4, 260, was the Chiefs' No. 10 draft choice in 1981 but spent the season on the injured reserve list His performance at center in 1982 won him the Mack Lee Hill Award, which goes annually to the Chief rookie who 'best exemplifies the spirit' of the late Hill.

Getty, 6-4, 270, was the Chiefs' No. 2 draft choice in 1974 and was second on the Kansas City squad in longevity with 119 games.

The Chiefs also placed wide receiver Ron WasOington on the injured reserve list. WasOington, a No. 4 draft choice in 1981, has yet to play a down for the Chiefs, having been placed on the injured reserve list all three years.

Kansas City waived seven players, including veterans Gossett, nose tackle Bill Acker and offensive lineman Al Steinfeld.

Gossett had been challenged in the pre-season by No. 5 draft choice Jim Arnold, a consensus All-America while at Vanderbilt, but appeared to be winning the head-to-head competition. Gossett had averaged 45.9 yards on 12 punts, although a 15-yarder Saturday against Chicago led to a tying score by the Bears in a game Kansas City eventually lost in overtime.

Arnold had averaged 39.3 yards on 12 kicks, but also had a bad outing Saturday, with three kicks averaging 31.3 yards.

Acker, 6-3, 255, was a free agent from the University of Texas in 1982 and had been used primarily as a nose guard and defensive end. Steinfeld, 6-4, 256, was another another free agent in 1982 and was converted from tackle to center. He had been a backup to Studdard.

Also waived were rookie running backs Willie Abrams and John DeGruttola, rookie defensive back Alan Lyday and rookie wide receiver James Caver.
