VIENNA, Austria -- Three Romanian refugees, including a pregnant woman, flew to Austria in a cropduster Thursday and requested political asylum, hoping to emigrate to the United States, police said.

'The three have all applied for political asylum and are on their way to (the country's main refugee camp in) Traiskirchen,' said a spokesman at the police headquarters in the province of Styria, where the plane landed.

The three refugees -- the 30-year-old pilot, a 27-year-old man and his pregnant 22-year-old wife who were not identified by name -- flew under radar levels across Yugoslavia and Hungary to touch down on a road near the southeastern town of Lafnitz, he said.

The plane was slightly damaged on landing but the passengers were all unharmed, the spokesman said.
