In the men's singles, part of a $75,000 Volvo Grand Prix tournament, both semifinals feature a Swede against an American.

Sweden's Mats Wilander, strongly favored to repeat his 1982 victory, plays Jim Gurfein, while unseeded players, Anders Jerryd and American Scott Lipton, meet in the other semi.

Wilander crushed countryman Stefan Simonsson 6-1, 6-2 Friday, while Jarryd disposed of yet another Swede, Jan Gunnarsson, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.

Gurfein and Lipton are the sensations of the tournament, with the latter defeating second-seeded home player Henrik Sundstrom, 6-2, 7-6.

'Sundstrom is ranked at number 20 in the world, so this is one of my best achievements,' Lipton said.

Gurfein beat Belgian champion Bernard Boileau, 6-4, 6-2.
