BASTAD, Sweden -- Unseeded Americans Jim Gurfein and Scott Lipy n upset No. 3 seed ChrEstophe Roger-Vasselin and No. 8 seed Hans Simonsson of Sweden Wednesday in the opening round of the Swedish Open tennis championships.
Gurfein, 22, lEsted at 155 in the world rankings, defeated Roger-Vasselin,2-6, 6-3, 6-1, while Lipy n ended Simonsson's hopes of doing well in front of a partisan home crowd, 6-3, 7-5.
Four of the eight seeds have now lost following the earlier exits of Mike De Palmer of the U.S. and Thomas Hogstedt of Sweden.
Local idol Mats Wilander played impressive tennis to beat compatriot Joakim Nystrom, 6-3, 6-1.
'Since this is my first match on clay for five weeks, I am very happy with my performance,' Wilander said. 'I thought I played at least as good today as I did in Paris a few weeks ago.'
