YONKERS, N.Y. -- Workers at the Otis Elevator plant, which will shut soon, will get extra unemployment benefits when the facility closes next month, a spokesman for Sen. Alfonse D'Amato said.

The spokesman said Wednesday the workers will receive 18 additional weeks of unemployment insurance because of a provision of the federal trade act of 1974 which provides for extra help for workers who lose their jobs because of foreign competition.

Unemployed workers in New York State currently get 34 weeks of benefits.

Otis Elevator will close its Yonkers factory in July. The first of the plant's 375 workers were laid off in February.
