SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- 'Star Wars' saga producer George Lucas, 39, and his Oscar-winning, film-editor wife Marcia are getting a divorce after 15 years of marriage and working together, an executive of Lucas Films announced Wednesday.
Sidney Ganis, company vice president, confirmed reports that the couple are splitting up, calling their divorce 'an amicable one.'
'The divorce will not affect the business of the company,' Ganis said, adding that he does not know when the couple plans to file papers in Marin County Superior Court in this community across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.
Mrs. Lucas, who moved to Marin County across as a bride in 1969, won an Oscar for her editing of 'Star Wars' and was credited for the editing of the saga's most recent episode, 'Return of the Jedi.'
She has also been acclaimed for her editing of Martin Scorcese's movies 'Taxi Driver' and 'New York, New York.'
The couple have a 2-year-old daughter, Amanda. It was not announced which parent planned to take custody of the child.
Lucas film chief executive officer Robert M. Grebel, said the divorce 'is not being taken lightly by the other members of the family-oriented Lucas company.
'All of us know and love both of these terrific people,' Grebel said, 'We feel a great sense of sorrow as you would feel for a divorce in your own family.'
The split will involve a $35 million community property settlement.
Lucas has become one of affluent Marin County's wealthiest property owners. He acquired a $5 million real estate empire and built on property worth an additional $10 million, after the skyrocketing success of his 'Star Wars' films.
In addition, Lucas built 3,000 acre, $50 million Skywalker Ranch near Nicasio, Calif., a retreat for work and pleasure complete with Victorian replicas and computer technology.
When the couple first moved to Marin in 1969, they rented a Mill Valley hilltop house for $120 a month.
