NEW YORK -- Veteran pitcher Jim Barr will be fined 'a significant amount' for disagreeing on the mound with San Francisco manager Frank Robinson, the Giants skipper announced Wednesday after the club's 7-6 victory over the New York Mets.

Barr, the third of five San Francisco pitchers, was lifted with two on and two out and the Giants leading 7-5 in the seventh inning and a 1-0 count on Brian Giles.

Robinson went to the mound and signalled for reliever Greg Minton, prompting Barr to toss the ball high in the air and start walking toward the San Francisco dugout.

Robinson, known for his aggressiveness during an All-Star career, called Barr back to the mound and openly berated the right-hander, puncutating his remarks with a forefinger to the chest. A few minutes, Barr trudged to the dugout, followed by Robinson, and the two continued to argue in the dugout before Barr exited for the clubhouse.

'You people saw it but you don't know what happened,' Robinson said after the game. 'I don't have a rule about the situation, but I've asked my pitchers to stay there (mound) until I ask for the ball. Then they're free to leave.

'He will be fined a significant amount for what he said to me afterwards.'

Barr, who had a 10-minute meeting in Robinson's office following the game, also attended by general manager Tom Haller, appeared upset by the incident and dismissed newsmen saying, 'I've got nothing to say so you might as well leave right now.'

In 1975, Barr was fined for calling then-Giants' manager Wes Westrum 'gutless,' after being removed for a pinch hitter. The fine was suspended pending a repetition.
