San Diego sent their two second round picks in...

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego sent their two second round picks in the 1983 draft to San Francisco in exchange for the 49ers' first round choice, the Chargers announced Friday.

The deal gave San Diego three first round choices inTuesday's draft. The Chargers now have the fifth, 20th and 22nd overall selections. The 49ers were to have chosen 23rd Tuesday.

The Chargers received the fifth overall choice by swapping first round choices with San Francisco as part of the 1981 deal that sent defensive end Fred Dean to the Niners.

Charger owner Eugene V. Klein said Friday's trade was designed to strengthen his team's position in the draft.
