WASHINGTON -- In a story carried by UPI Wednesday, the Justice Department said it has found no substantiation to allegations Sen. Strom Thurmond, R-S.C., received money from a firm owned by former CIA agent Edwin Wilson.

UPI reported that syndicated columnist Jack Anderson said an unidentified man claimed to have seen Thurmond twice receive envelopes with $10,000 cash from a middleman allegedly acting for Wilson, a former CIA agent and convicted arms smuggler.

Anderson said Thursday his column had identified the man who made the allegations as William W. Pearce. Anderson also said Thurmond's denials also had been carried.
