He also will be concerned in getting more involvement from students, staff, faculty and alumni.

'The products are there,' said Dowling, who begins his job on April 1, his 36th birthday. 'BU has excellent football, basketball and hockey teams and all we have to work on is promoting them. There's no reason why we can't do that.'

Dowling, a Cleveland native, most recently worked in sales and marketing for a resort real estate group in Hilton Head, S.C. He also has been involved with the Ivy Satellite network, teaming with former Harvard star Vic Gatto in airing Harvard-Yale games. He also has been an analyst for CBS.

Dowling quarterbacked Yale from 1967 to 1969, when the Elis compiled a 16-1-1 record. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the 11th round and had stops with New England and Green Bay in the NFL.
